Early in the 20th Century - starting around 1910 - the directors of the Worcester Art Museum in MA took a liking to French Impressionist Art and bought lots of it - some directly from the artists. It was like buying hand-written Amazon stock from Jeff Bezos.

Some American artists took note and made the trek to France to learn the trade. The Worcester Museum bought some of those works too. The current exhibition at the MAG in Rochester traces the attempts at impressionism in America as shown by paintings from the Worcester Art Museum.

Overall, I feel that the American artists were not successful, mainly because they were not talented and inspired in the way that community in Paris was. Some of the paintings in the exhibition are not museum quality other than in their historical context. A few American works come up to scratch; it's worth going to the exhibition and making your own judgement. Here I've only imaged the paintings I like; someone else can snap the lesser works.
